Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) rumored television might have a great new feature that has previously only been seen on Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Xbox and the Leap Motion Controller.
On Tuesday, reports were out that Apple would move to acquire Primesense, one of the key players involved in development of the Microsoft Kinect. The Kinect is a device that uses several sensors to read the movement of users, allowing the users to control on-screen actions through various sets of voice commands and gestures. Needless to say, it is a really nice technology.
Though the technology developed by Primesense is used in various mobile applications, the company's bread-and-butter technology surrounds the TV set.
Given that Apple probably won't release a dedicated TV set until the end of 2014, there is still plenty of time to integrate Primesense technology the same way that Apple is adding AuthenTec's sensor technology to the iPhone (reportedly).
With set-top boxes still seeing strong sales and Microsoft looking to further exploit the potential of its Kinect system, there's no telling what Apple might be able to do with the burgeoning technology.
Shares of Apple are up modestly Wednesday.
