Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) unveiled its next tablet device, the new iPad (TNIP) Wednesday.
So what's the big deal? The deal is Apple's new device has "Retina Display" for sharper images, a faster A5X processor, and 4G LTE, amongst other upgrades. The stock action (shares closed up about 0.08 percent amid a volatile session) hearkens back to last September/October when the iPhone 4S first debuted.
People looked at the 4S and said, "This is it? All it seems to have is voice command in Siri. Who's going to want to shell out more for such a minute upgrade?"
Last quarter Apple sold 37 million iPhone units; fan boys (and girls) were clearly willing to shell out whatever it took to get their hands on the latest installment. With TNIP, the story could be the same. Multitasking could become easier with the new processor. Photos and video will stream faster on 4G and look sharper with the high-definition display. And think about the gaming potential...
One of the immediate issues investors might be eying is the price. Apple dropped the price of its iPad 2 to $399 for the base model, which is just $100 below TNIPs $499 starting price (no 4G, though). Again, the same can be said for the iPhone, with the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, and 4S all still on the market. But the prior devices still sell.
Once more news is disseminated and analyst comments are in, Apple might be able to regain some of the upward momentum it's been missing this week.
