Think Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android is suitable for just smartphones and tablets? What about cameras and car stereos?
Rice cookers and refrigerators?
All of the above seem to be an appropriate use for Android. Companies like Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG), LG Electronics, Samsung and more are showing off similar wares at CES in Las Vegas this week.
The move is a boon for manufacturers as well as Google, which basically wants its operating system in any kind of item imaginable. Google's goal is to learn as much about consumers through massive data gathering and then selling that information to advertisers for pinpointed ad campaigns.
Product makers will also see benefit as Android is easy-to-use and the demand for more Internet-connected devices is growing.
Bloomberg gives the example of home interconnectivity. Say you're watching TV and waiting for your laundry to finishing drying. Without having to stop what you're doing, a little message would appear on-screen, altering you that the clothes aren't dry yet. You could use a touchscreen or remote and add another few minutes onto the cycle, if needed.
It seems like the logical next step moving forward. Coffee makers and clothes irons are much more advanced now than could probably be imagined 20 years ago. Having your home connected in more ways than one would also free up more time to spend with family, friends, or pursuing personal interests.
Our hope? A coffee maker than senses how tired you are and adjusts strength accordingly.
Shares of Google are about one percent lower Tuesday.
