Amazon.com (AMZN) Doesn't Completely Rule Out Smartphone Plans

Amid rumors over the past year or so that Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) might release a smartphone sometime soon, the company said it wouldn't. N
Not in 2013, anyway.
Recent market speculation had Amazon with plans to debut a branded-smartphone before the end of 2013. Chatter came from finance blogger Jessica Lessin.
Speaking to Bloomberg, Amazon spokesperson Drew Herdener said the company has no plans to introduce a smartphone this year. He also noted that, should the company decide to move forward with a smartphone, it would't be free for users.
Amazon is said to have been working with Foxconn Int'l over design and construction of a device to compete alongside Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), Samsung, and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), the largest smartphone players in the industry.
Selling a smartphone would allow Amazon to offer a customized shopping and media consumption experience for users, with the ultimate goal being able to drive sales higher.
Shares of Amazon are up in early trading Monday.
