Amazon (AMZN) to Release New Android Tablet, Kindles

July 13, 2011 4:22 PM EDT
Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) is planning to take on the tablet PC world with the introduction of its own -- and soon.

According to the WSJ Wednesday, Amazon is aiming to release it's own tablet PC by October, conveniently in time for the holiday 2011 shopping season.

The WSJ said Amazon may be looking to take on Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad and variations, though Amazon is more likely aiming to gain a better foothold in the Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android-based tablet marketplace.

So far, the specs seem pretty standard; one source said the device will have a nine-inch screen and run Android. Notably, the source said Amazon's tablet won't have a camera.

Come on, Amazon.

Separately, Amazon will release two new versions of its popular Kindle eReading device. The new Kindles will also use the same technology as the current versions, with super-efficient e-Ink. Amazon lowered the price on it's 3G version from $164 to $139.
