Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) shares are coming off intraday lows, as reports that the e-Commerce giant will be holding a press conference in New York on September 28th, 2011, have surfaced.
The original information came from AllThingsD's Peter Kafka, a leading tech journalist. He noted in a Twitter tweet Friday that a media tablet may debut at the event.
Amazon has been speculated to be producing a media tablet which will aim to compete with Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad and iPad 2. (Side note: who isn't?)
With the success of its Kindle e-Reader, which no one initially thought would be popular, Amazon has the tablet experience and market to push a viable alternative to the current market leader.
According to Bloomberg, the latest Kindle will have a color screen and double as a tablet computer. Amazon already has ties to media and publishing companies, giving it an advantage in an area where Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) and Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) may have missed the mark.
Further, the tablet may be priced well, either at or below the iPad, as the recent H-P price cut on its discontinued (or not) PlayBook showed a desire by the public for such a device, but not at exorbitant prices. Amazon may just want to take a little loss on each one in order to get it into the consumer's hands and generate better returns from higher-margin streaming and digital media.
Recently, Forrester Research has said that, at a price of $299 or so, the tablet will have initial sales of 3 million to 5 million units per month. This compared with the 9.25 million iPads that Apple shipped in its most recent quarter, or about 3.08 million.
Amazon's tablet will most likely run Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android mobile OS, though no word on whether Amazon will push the use of the system. The Kindle uses Android as well, but it wasn't used as a selling tool for the device, as many recent tablets have done.
Will Amzon try to turn the page in the continuing tablet saga? We have only five more days to find out.
Notably, the event comes just ahead of Apple's scheduled event for a potential iPhone 5 debut, which has been rumored for October 4th.
Amazon is trading about flat on Friday's session, after being down as much as 1.9 percent earlier.
