Amazon (AMZN) Ordering Millions of Tablets Ahead of 2011 Launch

August 5, 2011 8:19 AM EDT
Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) is planning to ship millions of it's new tablets through the third quarter of this year.

According to CENS, Amazon has tied up much of Quanta Computer's production line with it's tablet orders. According to the report, Amazon is demanding "800,000 to 1 million units of its model per month from August through October."

Amazon's tablet is also has "simpler technical specifications than competing models" and is therefore cost efficient. The specs reflect Amazon's "ambition to quickly gain a huge consumer base in the competitive landscape with budget-priced hardware and steadily carve out big profits with application software."

Reports of Amazon planning to release a tablet were first made shortly after Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad launch last year (has it only been a year or so since Apple debuted the iPad?), though reports have since rehashed the talks. Sources have said Amazon wants to get a tablet out ahead of the 2011 holiday shopping season.

Shares of Amazon are trading slightly lower ahead of the bell Friday.
