Amazon (AMZN) Aiming for Tablet Launch in Late Summer

Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) is looking to make a splash in the tablet PC market with the launch of its own branded version in late Summer.

According to Digitimes, Amazon is targeting about 4 million unit sales of its new tablet, which should launch as early as August or September.

Amazon is planning the launch so customers will become accustomed to it by the holiday season and add the device to their shopping lists.

Processors are said to be supplied by Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) with panels supplied by Wintek. LCD driver integrated circuits will be supplied by ILI Technology and Quanta Computer will be responsible for assemble.

Shipments are expected to be about 700,000-800,000 units per month.

The move will be yet another tablet PC to enter the market. Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad 2 is the de facto tablet PC in the market today, with offerings from Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ), Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM), and Morotola (NYSE: MMI), among others, looking to grab a piece of the pie. Amazon has already launched a wildly successful e-Reader in the Kindle, so it will be interesting to see how the company integrates its services (shopping, streaming content) into the device.

No word on whether it will be run by Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android OS, but smart money might want to bet on that.
