All Eyes on BlackBerry (BBRY) Into Annual Shareholders Meeting

July 9, 2013 6:53 AM EDT
BlackBerry (Nasdaq: BBRY) is on watch Tuesday morning as the company will its Annual and Special Meeting of Shareholders this morning at 10:00am EDT in Waterloo, Ontario.

Most of the focus, as might be expected, will be on handset sales. The most recent quarter saw BlackBerry ship about 2.7 million of BB10-equipped devices, far below estimates calling for shipments of 3 million to 3.5 million or more.

Investors might clamor for BlackBerry to do much more to enhance shareholder value. Given its high-margin services business and vast patent portfolio, a sale of the company might be one of the stronger options pushed. Given that the Canadian government has a say in what will happen with companies located within the country, interest might wane as sub losses have mounted and growth has been muted at best.

BlackBerry has also said it would be open to licensing its BB10 operating system, but given recent performance and consumer interest, its not clear how successful that venture will be. Look at how many device makers have embraced Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone 8. Aside from Nokia (NYSE: NOK), only HTC and Samsung have dipped toes in that pool.

One of the only hopes that BlackBerry would have is to not charge a licensing fee for BB10, or charge a very small one at best. This would be low-risk for OEMs, but wouldn't make sense for BlackBerry, which generally isn't worried about data gathering.

BlackBerry's live webcast of its ASMS can be listened to on July 9th at http://ca.blackberry.com/company/investors/events.html.
