Acer Chairman Wang: Microsoft (MSFT) Windows 8 momentum Improving

March 19, 2013 10:00 AM EDT
Following its fourth-quarter report, Taiwan-based electronics manufacturer Acer took a creative stance on expectations in the near-term tablet market

The company reported a net loss of NT$3.37 billion, versus analyst expectations of a NT$787 million loss. Excluding an intangible asset impairment charge, net income came at NT$131 million. Sales totaled NT$101.5 billion in the quarter.

Acer said its tablet shipments would increase 2.6 times in Q1 from the prior quarter. Fiscal 2013 shipments should hit five million units, but may climb to 10 million, according to Acer president Jim Wong.

More importantly, Wong said that momentum in Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows 8 devices has been improving. Acer chairman JT Wang echoed the sentiment during the company's conference call, saying that Microsoft "has done some good things finally" to revitalize the Windows ecosystem.

Microsoft is modestly in positive territory Tuesday.
