AT&T Confirms Security Lapse With Apple iPad

AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) confirmed the security weak spot on Thursday that exposed more than 100,000 Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPad user's email addresses to precision-targeted cyber hacking attacks.
The only users that were impacted were those who had signed up for AT&T's 3G wireless service for the tablet computer, and involved lack of security when accounts were logged into through the iPad.
"We take customer privacy very seriously and while we have fixed this problem, we apologize to our customers who were impacted," AT&T said in a statement.
The hacker group that is talking credit for finding the weakness, known as Goatse Security, said that it was able to trick the AT&T Web site into divulging more than 114,000 email addresses. The hackers said they were able to access the accounts of famous media personalities and government officials.
The group said that it had contacted AT&T before going public and waited to make the information public until the situation was corrected by the wireless provider, which said that it fixed the issue on Tuesday.
AT&T said that it will contact all iPad users that may have been impacted by the circumstance.
The Wi-Fi only models of the iPad were not impacted by the hacker security risk. Apple has sold more than 2 million units of the device since it was launched just over two months ago.
Shares of AT&T are up 50 cents to $25.40 in midday market movement on Thursday, while shares of apple are up 1.78 percent to $247.53.
