AT&T (T) Responds to Malestrom Surrounding T-Mobile Merger (S)

Following Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) lashing out, AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) CEO Randal Stephenson defended the company's offer to acquire T-Mobile, saying the move will boost call quality, reduce overseas roaming fees and continue intense competition.

Stephenson said integrating the underused T-Mobile Spectrum into AT&T's network would improve capacity in some large U.S. cities by 30 percent.

"This transaction is very instrumental," Stephenson said. "Virtually on the day you close the deal, getting a 30 percent lift in capacity in New York City: that’s a significant improvement in call quality and data throughput."

Sprint has joined consumer groups in trying to block the deal from getting done, saying it would reduce the number of major carriers in the U.S. and reduce options from low cost mobile service.

"This is an intensely competitive industry,” Stephenson added. "It is intense before we do this transaction, it will be intense after we do this transaction."
