AT&T (T) Preparing for Life After Apple's (AAPL) iPhone

This coming holiday season, AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) will be the only provider with smartphones on every major operational system, as the telecommunications company prepares for the inevitable end to its monogamous relationship with Apple Inc.'s (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone.
AT&T has been adding devices from Apple's rivals, including Android handsets from Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG), Windows 7 smartphones from Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) and BlackBerrys from Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: RIMM).
Media reports have been pointing to the iPhone being offered through Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) as soon as the first quarter of 2011.
AT&T and Verizon also recently announced that they will begin selling the iPad tablet computer from Apple.
AT&T revealed said earlier this week that it sold 5.2 million iPhones last quarter, with 1.25 million of those being activated by new customers, just less than half of the 2.6 million new customers the wireless provider added in the period. AT&T has been the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in the U.S. since the popular device burst on the scene in 2007.
