AOL Inc. (NYSE: AOL) has brought in financial advisers to explore potential strategic options for the Internet company, including a possible tie-up with its larger competitor Yahoo Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO), according to a report in the Wall Street Journal on Monday.
The report notes that the advisers for AOL have been working on a way to combine the two Internet companies' operations.
The people familiar with the matter cited by the Journal stated that AOL has held merger talks in the past with Yahoo, but has stopped short of making a proposal.
AOL is apparently encouraged by the perceived openness of the Yahoo board being more open to the idea of a strategic tie up, but there have been no formal talks between the two companies.
The report notes that combining with Yahoo is not the only strategic option that AOL is looking into with its financial advisers.
