AMD (AMD) CEO Says iPad is Eating Up Sales of Notebooks

Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NYSE: AMD) said that it will weight for the market to develop before committing R&D resources toward tablet processors, adding that the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPad is cannibalizing the sales of netbooks and notebooks.

AMD Chief Executive Officer Dirk Meyer said, "Clearly, in the last quarter or two, the tablet has represented a disruption in the notebook market. If you ask five people in the industry, you'll get five different answers as to what degree there's been cannibalization by tablets of either netbooks or notebooks."

On Thursday AMD posted a narrowed loss of $118 million for the third quarter, down from $128 million last year.

AMD it the world's second largest maker of microprocessors behind larger rival Intel Corp. (NASDAQ INCT).

Shares of AMD are up 2.68 percent to $7.34 in premarket trade on Friday.
