According to federal authorities, the 12th person involved in a Russian spy ring has been detained and deported back to Russia, U.S. law enforcement said on Tuesday.
The latest spy, Alexey Karetnikov has been in the U.S. since October 2009 and was living near Seattle working for Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) as a software tester. The technology giant confirmed that Karetnikov in fact did work for the company for a period of nine months.
Microsoft spokesman Lou Gellos confirmed the news and said that Karetnikov was the man detained and deported by authorities, but gave no further information about the alleged spy’s activities within Microsoft.
Government officials said that the Karetnikov, a Russian citizen in his mid-to-late 20s, had been detained on immigration violations, but there was no significant evidence in place charge him with a crime.
Federal law enforcement said that "he was just in the early stages; had just set up shop." The FBI was monitoring Karetnikov almost immediately after his arrival in the U.S. and had obtained no information in his time in the country.
