"Hulu for Magazines" Coming to Google (GOOG), Not Apple (AAPL)

Next Issue Media, which is being called the "Hulu for Magazines" expects to launch in early 2011, but iPad owners will not have the ability to shop around the digital news racks.

The initial incarnation of Next Issue will only work on devices sporting Google Inc.'s (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android operating system and not on Apple Inc.'s iOS, according tot he company's CEO Morgan Guenther.

Guenther added that the problem is not a technical issue, and that the software will work with Apple. He expects the service to be on the iPad in the future.

The idea here is that the openness of Google is more palatable to the publishers that own Next Issue, while Apple continues to believe that the publishers will come to them.

Apple is likely thinking that the iPad will continue to dominate the tablet market by a wide enough margin that publishers will have to bend to the company's terms to get content out to consumers.
