Wave Life Sciences outlines 2026 priorities for obesity drug development

Wave Life Sciences Ltd. (NASDAQ: WVE) outlined its strategic priorities for 2026, including plans to advance its obesity treatment WVE-007 and expand its RNA editing portfolio. The clinical-stage biotechnology company made the announcement ahead of its presentation at the 44th Annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference.

The company expects to initiate a Phase 2a multidose portion of the WVE-007 INLIGHT clinical trial in individuals with obesity, higher BMI and comorbidities in the first half of 2026. Wave also plans to begin new trials evaluating WVE-007 as an add-on to incretin and as post-incretin maintenance therapy during 2026.

Initial data from a 240 mg single-dose of WVE-007 showed improved body composition with fat loss comparable to GLP-1 treatments at three months while preserving muscle mass. The treatment demonstrated potential for once or twice-yearly dosing. Wave expects to report six-month follow-up data from the 240 mg cohort and three-month data from the 400 mg cohort in the first quarter of 2026.

In RNA editing, Wave continues development of WVE-006 for alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency following clinical data from September 2025. The company expects additional data from the RestorAATion-2 trial in 2026, including results from the 400 mg multidose cohort in the first quarter.

Wave plans to file a Clinical Trial Application in 2026 for WVE-008, targeting homozygous PNPLA3 I148M liver disease, which affects an estimated nine million individuals in the U.S. and Europe.

The company reported preliminary, unaudited cash and cash equivalents of approximately $602 million as of December 31, 2025, with expected cash runway into the third quarter of 2028. Wave remains on track to file a New Drug Application in 2026 for WVE-N531, a treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
