Proto-danksharding, officially referred to as EIP-4844, is the main attraction of Ethereum's forthcoming Dencun upgrade. The idea, which bears the names of Ethereum researchers Dankrad Feist and Proto Lambda, was put forth in Ethereum Improvement Proposal 4844 (EIP-4844). EIP-4844 will soon be put into effect as part of the March 13, 2024, Ethereum Dencun Upgrade. This is a draft version of danksharding, a project that has been planned for years but has kept getting delayed.


Rather than sharding the entire Ethereum network, Danksharding offers an interface to interact with currently available Ethereum layer two solutions. Additionally, it offers a method for processing more data per block, enabling more complicated transactions without increasing gas prices or slowing down the network. In essence, the goal is to increase the efficiency of blockchain rollups.


In anticipation of danksharding, proto-danksharding presents a novel type of transaction known as "blob-carrying transactions," along with the associated data type -- "blobs." "Blobs," which temporarily store data off-chain to reduce storage and processing costs on Ethereum, are essential to Dencun's first proto-danksharding feature.


What Are Blob-Carrying Transactions?

Blob-carrying transactions essentially contain validity proof that lets the Ethereum chain confirm its legitimacy without having to read the blob.

It employs a process known as a KZG commitment scheme to do this. The approach ensures that the EVM can view a commitment to a blob but not the blob data itself by using Zero-Knowledge proofs. Transactions that carry blobs have a mempool that is distinct from the EVM. This optimizes block space and maintains data security.


Naturally, a new fee structure would follow, given the nature of the transaction. The dynamic pricing structure for blob-carrying transactions is derived from EIP-1559 and is determined by supply and demand. Higher fees are usually incurred by transactions involving more than three blobs; these fees range by about 12.5% for every block.


Proto-Dankshading's Potential Benefits for Ethereum

Ethereum has been the top network for NFTs and decentralized apps (dapps) in the cryptocurrency space for a long time, but the network has struggled with high gas prices and slow transaction rates. Optimism and Arbitrum, two Layer-2 scaling networks, sidestepped these problems by developing on top of the Ethereum mainnet and "rolling up" numerous transactions into a single transaction that is submitted to Ethereum.


Proto-danksharding will further increase the affordability and efficiency of layer-2 networks.

Danksharding will assist Ethereum in avoiding congestion by making it easier for the network to handle rollups. It will simplify the process of validating data on Ethereum's layer-2 networks. Danksharding will sample and validate individual bits of data on Ethereum rollups rather than confirming vast portions of the data.


By doing this, gas prices across the entire Ethereum network will be reduced--not just on layer two chains.


The Ethereum ecosystem should soon be able to manage more than 100,000 transactions per second at a reasonable cost after danksharding is fully implemented, according to developers.

Everyone agrees that development was significant since it opened up billions of dollars in capital, but that the deployment of Dencun will have an even bigger impact on how the Ethereum ecosystem works on a daily basis.
