Trump admin discussed allowing Nvidia H200 sales to China

Investing.com -- The Trump administration is considering allowing Nvidia to sell its H200 artificial intelligence chips to China, according to a Bloomberg report on Friday citing people familiar with the matter.

Internal discussions about potential H200 shipments to China have reportedly taken place in recent days, though no final decision has been made. The discussions could remain internal without resulting in actual license approvals.

The consideration of H200 shipments marks a significant shift from the Trump administration’s previous public positions on chip export controls and would represent a major concession to Beijing that will likely face opposition from China hawks in Washington. An approval would also substantially ease U.S. trade restrictions designed to limit China’s AI capabilities.

President Donald Trump had previously suggested he might discuss exports of Nvidia’s most advanced chips with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, though the topic did not arise during their recent talks. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has indicated that exporting the current Blackwell generation of chips to China might be possible once they are no longer cutting-edge technology, potentially in one to two years.
