The Dow gained 32.53 points today to close at 12,523.31, the Nasdaq added 7.55 points to close at 2,448.64, and the S&P 500 gained 8.2 points to close at 1,428.820. Trading was modest one day ahead of the Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates (expected at 2:15PM EST).
Volume was modest with 2.75 billion shares trading on the NYSE and 1.86 billion trading on the Nasdaq.
Advancers topped Decliners by a margin of 18:15 on the NYSE and 18:13 on the Nasdaq.
In Individual stories, Align Technology (Nasdaq: ALGN) added 21.2% after reporting Q4 loss of $0.01 per share, 14 cents better than estimates. Revenues came in at $55.2 million versus the consensus of $54 million. Sees Q1 EPS of $0.02-$0.04 versus the consensus of a $0.05 loss. Sees Q1 revenues of $56.8-$59.8 million versus the consensus of $54.75 million. Sees FY07 EPS of $0.15-$0.27 versus the consensus of $0.01. Sees FY07 revenues of $240-$255 million versus the consensus of $238.37 million.
Tvia, Inc. (Nasdaq: TVIA) fell 28.6% after the company announced that the audit committee of its board of directors has commenced a review of the Company's financial results for the 2006 and 2007 fiscal years and the quarterly periods therein with respect to issues related to collectibility of accounts receivable, the value of inventory held by customers and the timing of recorded sales. Now, all earnings press releases and similar communications issued by the Company relating to those periods referred to above should not be relied upon.
Companies expected to report earnings tomorrow: Alcan (NYSE: AL), Allergan (NYSE: AGN), Altria (NYSE: MO), Constellation Energy (NYSE: CEG), Dominion (NYSE: D), Eastman Kodak (NYSE: EK) Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY), Hilton Hotels (NYSE: HLT), Kraft Foods (NYSE: KFT), L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL), MeadWestvaco (NYSE: MWV), New York Times (NYSE: NYT), Public Service (NYSE: PEG), Sealed Air (NYSE: SEE), Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) and Wolverine (NYSE: WWW).
Tomorrow, investors will be looking for economic data on GDP Annualized, Employment Cost Index, Chicago PMI, Construction Spending, Oil Inventories, and the FOMC Rate Decision.
