Segway Owner Heselden Dies After Driving a Segway Off a Cliff

Segway owner James W. Heselden died Sunday morning when he drove off a cliff on one of his two-wheeled scooters near his home in West Yorkshire, England.

The police in West Yorkshire did not treat the death as if there was foul play involved, according to a police spokesman, saying that a cause of death had not been determined.

Heselden, 62, was driving a Segway on his estate when he fell into the River Wharfe. The British millionaire had bought the Segway company in January, after making his fortune with Hesco Bastion, which produces product for the military to control flood waters.

"It is with great sadness that we have to confirm that Jimi Heselden has died in a tragic accident near his home in West Yorkshire," Hesco Bastion said in a statement. "Our thoughts go out to his family and many friends, who have asked for privacy at this time."

The Segway scooter was invented in 2001 and is able to change direction depending on which way the driver tilts. The vehicles sales had exceeded expectations when first released in 2002, but demand has since slowed.
