Investing.com -- Raymond James released its Token Observer report for August 2026 on Friday, tracking trends in artificial intelligence model performance, pricing, and usage metrics.

The report found that the price difference between the top three and bottom three AI models expanded to approximately $50 per million tokens in August, compared to $30 in July. The increase was driven by new cybersecurity models pushing pricing higher at the top end of the market.

Silicon Data reported a 25% month-over-month decline in average token pricing to $1.15 in August. Raymond James noted that Silicon Data's figures likely reflect a heavy concentration of lower-cost open source models and may not represent overall industry conditions.

Model performance benchmarks across eight categories showed the top two models outperforming the bottom two by more than 300% in agentic and tool use applications. Performance improved by approximately 30% across all eight benchmark categories, which included general knowledge, agentic and tool use, coding and cybersecurity, and health and legal applications.

Token volume data from OpenRouter indicated a 45% month-over-month increase in August, up from approximately 40% gains in the prior three months. Raymond James noted that OpenRouter data likely skews toward developers and understates enterprise and consumer usage.

Vercel data for August showed Hyper AI Labs, which includes Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and Meta, held 85% of token spending share compared to 13% for Chinese AI Labs including DeepSeek, Moonshot, and Z.ai. Volume share was more balanced, with Hyper AI Labs at 46% and Chinese AI Labs at 39%.

GPU pricing increased 8% month-over-month in July according to Semianalysis data, while Silicon Data reported a 1% increase for August.
