Putin Calls Crimea 'Inseparable' Part of Russia, Criticizes West
Traders are paying close attention to Russian President Vladimir Putin's address on the Crimea situation as Russia takes steps towards absorbing the region following this weekend's vote.
Putin called Crimea a "sacred" and "inseparable" part of Russia, a symbol of Russian military glory. He said Crimea was stolen from Russia as the USSR broke down with events happening so quickly that citizens didn't realize the dramatic effects.
He said the Crimera referendum was held in full accordance with democratic procedures and international law. Putin went on to say Russians in Ukraine are fed up with the Ukrainian government. He notes no legitimate authority yet in Ukraine.
He said Russia national interest must be respected and Western partners stepped over the line. He said the West has been trying to hold Russia back and blames the West for creating chaos around the world. He praises China, India for its outlook on Crimea. He said Russia will address Western sanctions.
Finally, Putin moved to formally annex Crimea and Sevastopol.
Stock futures are mildly higher amid the news. Dow futures are up 11 points, S&P 500 futures are up 1.5 points and Nasdaq futures are up 2 points.
