Needham analyst Laura Martin reiterated a Buy rating and $450.00 price target on Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL), with shares last closing at $347.68.
The reaffirmation follows a joint announcement by Alphabet and Unity (NYSE: U) of a strategic partnership to develop an integrated gaming platform called "Playground," described as allowing users to create, play, and share video games using text prompts without requiring coding. Alphabet's Gemini large language model would handle code generation, while Unity would supply the gaming engine. Alphabet would provide artificial intelligence capabilities and global distribution.
Martin said the announcement shows Alphabet intends to use Gemini and its AI infrastructure "not just to improve Search, but to build entirely new consumer ecosystems," comparing the potential platform model to YouTube's user-generated content structure.
The analyst noted that Unity is also working with OpenAI Codex on related efforts, and that Roblox (NYSE: RBLX) is rolling out generative AI tools for game creation. Martin added that if game creation barriers fall and the resulting market expansion occurs within a walled-garden platform such as Alphabet's or Roblox's, that outcome could be unfavorable for advertising businesses at AppLovin (NASDAQ: APP), Unity, and Liftoff.
