Investing.com -- Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ: META) has expanded WhatsApp’s business utility by enabling guest calling capabilities, allowing non-account holders to join end-to-end encrypted voice and video calls at no cost. The strategic update directly targets competitive friction points in the digital communications market by eliminating time limits, account registration requirements, and software download barriers for invitees.
Under the new functionality, WhatsApp account holders can generate call links to host 1:1 or group sessions supporting up to 32 participants. Non-users can access these calls directly through desktop browsers after host approval, accessing core collaborative features such as screen sharing, emoji reactions, and hand-raising.
The feature expansion incorporates strict privacy controls to maintain the platform's security architecture while opening access to external participants. Guest users operate with restricted permissions, remaining unable to view other participants' phone numbers, transmit text messages, or invite additional attendees without explicit host consent.
Later this year, Meta plans to deepen the feature's workflow integration by rolling out native calendar plugins for Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook. The upcoming integration signals a broader ambition to capture professional and educational communications traffic traditionally dominated by legacy videoconferencing tools.
Against that backdrop, the update positions WhatsApp to drive higher cross-platform engagement while reinforcing Meta's broader strategy of converting casual messaging services into productivity infrastructure. By reducing onboarding friction, Meta strengthens the platform's utility for enterprise-adjacent workflows and group collaboration.
Markets reacted cautiously to the heightened competition in the collaboration sector following the announcement. Ringcentral Inc (NYSE: RNG) shares fell 2.7%, while Zoom Communications, Inc (NASDAQ: ZM) slipped 1.8%. Microsoft Corp., which hit an all-time high earlier in the week, pulled back 1.0%.
