Jefferies conference highlights mining sector optimism on copper

Investing.com -- Jefferies held its annual Industrials Conference in New York City this week, hosting over 60 metals, mining and steel companies. The investment bank reported high investor interest in the sector with positive sentiment toward copper.

Copper and aluminum producers expressed optimism about demand driven by electrification while supply remains limited. Mining companies are focusing on brownfield expansions and debottlenecking projects rather than large capital-intensive developments. Weather disruptions from El Niño have been substantial and could affect third quarter and second half results.

Major diversified miners are prioritizing copper growth alongside projects in lithium, potash and iron ore. Management teams believe the market does not fully recognize the quality of their businesses. Jurisdictional risk has become a key discussion point for these companies.

Rio Tinto and Anglo American highlighted the cash flow strength of their iron ore operations. Rio Tinto noted its position near the bottom of the steep iron ore cost curve, which supports strong earnings through market cycles.

Coal companies may be able to secure higher prices for 2027 contracts as China's entry into the seaborne market pulls Australian coal from traditional customers, creating opportunities for US coal suppliers. El Niño conditions could increase demand through heat-related energy use and create supply constraints. Coal miners are focused on returning capital to shareholders from free cash flow.

US steel producers reported accelerating demand growth across most end markets. Steel companies view a potential reduction in Section 232 tariffs to 25% from Canada and Mexico as manageable. Algoma management considers a long-term tariff rate of 10-15% on Canadian steel entering the US as economically sustainable for the Canadian steel market.
