Iconic Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner Dies

George Steinbrenner, the iconic and controversial owner of the New York Yankees baseball club, died at his home in Florida Tuesday at the age of 80.

Never has there been an owner that was more loved by his team and its fans and at the same time hated by his rivals. He brought the Yankees back to prominence after he purchased the club in 1973 for $9 million, winning seven World Series titles and 11 American League pennants.

His family and the baseball club announced his death but gave no details, but media sources say that he suffered a massive heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. Steinbrenner had been in failing health for some time.

He was perhaps best known for his center stage approach of ownership, always in the spotlight, and for his open checkbook that was in pace to bring any player he desired to the club. Even after Major League Baseball enacted a luxury tax to keep teams from buying up players, Steinbrenner simply paid it and did things his way.

“He was an incredible and charitable man,” his family said in a statement. "He was a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again."

The family said that the funeral service for the man known to many as "the Boss" would be private, but a separate service for the public would be scheduled.
