Investing.com -- Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) shares rose 6% Friday after Barclays upgraded the health insurer to overweight from equal-weight ahead of the upcoming Medicare Star ratings release.
The stock climbed as much as 9% intraday, marking its largest gain since June, following the upgrade by Barclays analyst Andrew Mok, who cited greater conviction in the company’s prospects for Medicare Star ratings.
Mok upgraded the stock ahead of the October Star ratings catalyst, expected around Oct. 8, based on "an increasingly constructive view that the company will flip several contracts to bonus status, including H5216, which covers 2.4 million lives."
The H5216 contract represents the most critical component of the company’s long-term 2028 EPS target and is worth approximately $1.5 billion of EBIT and $9 of EPS, according to the analyst.
Mok raised the probability that Humana’s H5216 contract will be upgraded to 75%, noting that the company enters the 2028 ratings cycle in a much stronger position than it did a year ago.
Barclays raised its price target on Humana to $515 from $407.
