Goldman Sachs sees August air traffic growth at 1.6%

Investing.com -- Goldman Sachs forecasts that global air traffic increased 1.6% year-over-year in August, based on individual airline reports and TSA passenger volume data. The firm expects the global airline load factor reached 86% for the month.

Global airline forward scheduled capacity shows year-over-year growth rates of 2% in September, 3% in October, and 3% in November. This reflects controlled capacity expansion amid volatile fuel costs, with some acceleration from recent months.

Boeing (NYSE: BA) reported 15 new orders and zero cancellations in August. Airbus reported 67 new aircraft orders with no cancellations for the same period. Parked aircraft as a percentage of total fleet stands at 11.3%, up 20 basis points month-over-month.

In the business jet sector, European operations rose 1% year-over-year in August after declining 1% in July. US business jet operations increased 2% year-over-year in August, following a 7% gain in July. Business jet used inventory was up 1% sequentially in August, representing 6.7% of the active fleet.

International air traffic declined 0.1% in July after decreasing 1% in June. International passenger capacity increased 0.3% year-over-year in July after falling 1% in June.

International freight traffic rose 5% year-over-year in July, following a 10% increase in June. International freight capacity was up 2% year-over-year in July after rising 5% in June.

Load factors across global airlines were 85% for July, unchanged from a year earlier.
