Exclusive: Modovolo taps BQP quantum-inspired software to cut drone design cycle

Investing.com -- BQP, a developer of quantum-accelerated simulation software, and drone manufacturer Modovolo have completed a commercial deployment that compressed the design cycle for Modovolo’s next-generation unmanned aerial systems, Investing.com has learned.


BQP, which last year partnered with NVIDIA and Classiq on a demonstration that combines quantum and classical computing for advanced simulation workflows, has seen its flagship platform, BQPhy, integrated into Modovolo’s engineering pipeline to optimize a patent-pending line of 3D-printed propellers.


According to details seen by Investing.com, the platform runs on the QuantumNOW solver engine, which is said to apply quantum-inspired algorithms to existing high-performance computing and GPU infrastructure.


This allows engineering teams to run tens of thousands of design simulations within the compute footprint typically required for a fraction of that workload.


Conventional computational fluid dynamics and structural optimization tools restrict engineers to a handful of design variations, which can result in functional but unoptimized hardware.


Modovolo had previously built its own genetic algorithms for propeller optimization, but relying on traditional optimization methods was seen as extremely time-intensive, with local server runs potentially taking days to produce a single design that frequently had to be scrapped.


However, BQPhy has now given Modovolo the computational muscle to explore a substantial number of design variables at once.


The deployment comes as McKinsey’s 2026 Quantum Technology Monitor put global investment in quantum tech startups at $12.6 billion, while Deloitte projects U.S. aerospace and defense spending on advanced computational tools and AI reaching $5.8 billion by 2029.
