Citi sees US equity gains if Republicans keep Senate control
Investing.com -- Citi US Equity Strategy said Tuesday that mid-term polls point to a higher probability of a Democratic sweep, which the firm believes is largely reflected in current US equity market sentiment.
The bank outlined two alternative scenarios. Republicans could outperform expectations and maintain Senate control, as polls remain within the margin of error in several key states. Democrats could also secure more Senate seats than anticipated, potentially reaching 53 or more seats.
Citi said a Republican Senate retention would provide a tailwind for equities through year-end. A larger-than-expected Democratic Senate majority could create valuation pressure on stocks due to concerns about higher corporate taxes ahead of the 2028 election.
The firm noted that several closely contested Senate races leave open the possibility of either Republican Senate control or a stronger Democratic presence in the chamber. Equity market reaction would likely be positive in the first case and negative in the second.
Citi pointed to approval ratings and generic ballot polls suggesting a substantial Democratic pickup. The bank said the 2006 Bush mid-terms appear to be the closest historical comparison.
The firm said its preferred mid-term strategy to favor health care over financials and banks has largely played out. If Republicans retain the Senate, Citi expects a tactical tailwind for markets. An outsized Democratic Senate majority would likely create additional pressure on equities.
The bank said budget, debt ceiling, deficit funding and tax rates will become important issues heading into 2027.
