Bill Gates demands federal AI guardrails, warns of "a billion deaths"

Investing.com -- Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is breaking from the tech industry’s traditional resistance to government oversight, using an upcoming television appearance to demand strict federal regulation of artificial intelligence.

In an interview slated for NBC’s Meet the Press, Gates argues that relying on tech labs to police themselves is no longer tenable. While recent industry discourse has been dominated by whistleblower fears of AI eventually wiping out humanity, Gates provides a more immediate, pragmatic context: the sheer destructive capability of these tools in the hands of bad actors today.

"No one thinks self-regulation is enough," Gates stated, emphasizing that politicians and law enforcement must step in to mandate safeguards.

To underscore the urgency for Washington to act, Gates offered a stark assessment of the technology’s potential for mass casualties. "AI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths," he warned. "There’s never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with ill intent using the latest AI tools".
