Analyst explains why optical stocks are moving higher

Investing.com -- In a note on Tuesday, Evercore ISI highlighted three reasons why optical stocks are rallying, with Lumentum (NASDAQ: LITE) and Ciena (NYSE: CIEN), Coherent (NYSE: COHR) and Nokia (NYSE: NOK) all gaining on Monday.

Analyst Amit Daryanani pointed first to expectations that the FCC will limit imports of foreign-produced optical transceivers by the end of the first quarter of 2027. The move would effectively remove Chinese suppliers from the U.S. market for next-generation 3.2T transceivers.

An expert on a recent Evercore call said about two-thirds of all optical transceivers today are Chinese. Daryanani stated that the restrictions would create a significant headwind for the pace of AI deployment, but they should benefit U.S. and allied manufacturers.

The second driver was weekend reports from Asian outlets that expansion plans at indium phosphide manufacturers have been wavering.

Yields are averaging below what forecast supply growth requires. The analyst said optics has shifted from a five-year cycle to near-annual increases in lane speeds, and Chinese suppliers face challenges adding capacity at the latest speeds with acceptable yields.

The third driver was renewed confidence in the durability of AI spending.

The analyst added that earnings so far have appeared healthy, while Meta’s equity raise and SpaceX’s financing commitment point to ongoing durability.

“Net/Net: We think that amid last week’s selloff, the optics space remains attractive as a critical bottleneck to the AI buildout. Recent news flow also points to domestic companies are poised to benefit from regulatory action and by being technology leaders,” concluded Daryanani.
