American Battery Technology stock surges on export approval

Investing.com -- American Battery Technology Co (NASDAQ: ABAT) shares rose 10% in premarket trading Thursday after the company received U.S. government approval to export up to $100 million in recycled black mass material.

The approval from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security allows the company to sell its recycled black mass under specified terms following recently enacted federal export controls on critical battery materials.

Black mass contains lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, and graphite, which can be refined and returned to the supply chain for manufacturing new products. The company processes end-of-life batteries and manufacturing scrap at its commercial-scale recycling facility near Reno, Nevada, which began operations in 2023.

The export license follows a period of growth for the company. American Battery Technology reported over 400% YoY revenue growth in its fiscal year 2026 results.

"We are grateful for this license and continued support from the U.S. government for the sales of our domestic critical mineral products as we scale both our current critical mineral recycling facility and also our second recycling facility supported by $150 million in competitive grants from the U.S. Department of Energy," said Ryan Melsert, CEO of American Battery Technology Company.

The company is expanding its operations with a second recycling facility backed by $150 million in competitive grants from the U.S. Department of Energy. The facility produces copper, aluminum, steel, lithium-rich intermediates, and black mass from battery recycling using internally developed technologies.
