Investing.com -- Ally Financial (NYSE: ALLY) stock surged 6% on Wednesday after the company announced a $2 billion share repurchase program that could begin as early as the current quarter.
The multi-year buyback program, which has no set expiration date, represents approximately 15% of Ally’s current market capitalization.
"This share repurchase authorization reflects the momentum of our core businesses and our conviction in the path ahead," said Ally CEO Michael Rhodes in a statement.
TD Cowen analyst Moshe Orenbuch noted the announcement came earlier than expected. "We view this as a positive, as it will drive both higher EPS as well as continued ROTE improvement, which is a key to driving higher equity valuation," Orenbuch wrote.
The analyst had previously anticipated a buyback announcement in 2026, with modest repurchases of approximately $500 million over 2026-2027, suggesting the newly announced program may proceed at a faster pace than previously modeled.
