Telecom stocks tumble on SpaceX spectrum acquisition news

Investing.com -- Shares of major U.S. telecommunications companies took a sharp hit in after-hours trading Thursday after SpaceX announced a definitive agreement to acquire a nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio from Grain Management.

The acquisition paves the way for SpaceX’s Starlink Mobile to deploy a hybrid satellite-and-terrestrial network, positioning the aerospace company as a formidable, direct competitor to legacy wireless providers. Following the announcement, AT&T Inc. plummeted 6.75%, T-Mobile US dropped 5.4%, and Verizon Communications fell 5%.

Closing the Terrestrial Gap

Under the terms of the agreement, SpaceX will acquire 100% of Grain Management’s 800 MHz holdings, which includes up to 14 megahertz of paired low-band frequencies. The transaction addresses a critical technical gap for Starlink Mobile, allowing the company to build a coverage layer that penetrates physical obstacles such as building walls.

While Starlink Mobile already utilizes a global 2 GHz mid-band spectrum for high-bandwidth capacity, the addition of the 800 MHz band ensures seamless, uninterrupted service indoors, outdoors, and in cellular dead zones. Crucially, SpaceX noted that most existing, unmodified mobile devices already support this underused frequency.

Once the deal receives final Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approval, Starlink Mobile intends to become the first network operator to seamlessly blend a satellite-to-mobile constellation with an advanced terrestrial architecture.

FCC Approves Gen2 Constellation

The spectrum acquisition coincides with a major regulatory victory for Elon Musk’s company. This week, the FCC formally approved Starlink Mobile’s Gen2 constellation application, authorizing the launch of 15,000 advanced satellites optimized for the 2 GHz spectrum globally.

According to SpaceX, these V2 satellites will deliver more than 100 times the bandwidth of the current generation. The commission also authorized the full range of backhaul bands (Ka/V/E/W) used by Starlink’s V3 broadband satellites, allowing them to interface with the existing gateway network.

Grain Management’s Strategic Flip

The blockbuster sale marks a rapid turnaround for Grain Management, a global investment firm specializing in digital infrastructure. Grain acquired the 800 MHz portfolio from T-Mobile just two months ago, in August 2026, in an exchange involving cash and Grain’s 600 MHz spectrum.

"For nearly twenty years, we have built Grain to see opportunity where others see complexity," said David Grain, Founder and CEO of Grain Management. "Our spectrum expertise allows us to connect the strategic value of these assets with the technologies and operators that can realize their potential. This agreement with SpaceX brings that capability to bear at extraordinary scale."
