National Bank of Greece (NBG) Lower as Peers Seek Liquidity Assistance

National Bank of Greece (NYSE: NBG) is lower early Friday following news that peers Eurobank Ergasias and Alpha Bank have asked the Bank of Greece for access to an emergency cash facility.

Reports have executives from the two lenders saying that the move was only a precaution and neither institution faced an immediate liquidity situation.

Speculation has the National Bank of Greece and Piraneus Bank making a similar move over the next few days. National Bank of Greece told the WSJ it hasn't asked for emergency liquidity assistance (ELA funding and has no intention to do so, while Piraneus Bank didn't offer commentary.

Shares of National Bank of Greece are down about 7 percent.
