Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès is said to have resigned as director of the Bitcoin Foundation.

The Bitcoin confirmed the news on Sunday with the following blog post:

Effective immediately, Mt. Gox has submitted their resignation from the board of directors. We are grateful for their early and valuable contributions as a founding member in launching the Bitcoin Foundation. MtGox Co. Ltd. (Japan) held one of the three elected industry member seats. Further details, including election procedures, will be forthcoming.

Mt. Gox has been front-and-center in the Bitcoin industry after it halted withdraws recently due to glitches in its software. The announcement come following months of problems with transactions between Bitoin and U.S. dollars.

Karpelès' resignation isn't the first high-profile exit for the Bitcoin Founderation. Last January, Charles Shrem stepped down as director after being accused of money laundering. Shrem pleaded not guilty to the charges.
