Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) has had a slew of great/crazy ideas in the past, but the latest might be a game-changer for one large segment of the population.
Thursday, Google said it was developing a contact lens which would be able to sense glucose levels via a tiny, embedded sensor. That's right, the company largely known for Internet search, mapping, and the Android mobile operating system is delving deeper into the medical field.
But, Google isn't making drugs or offering fitness tips; the company is intelligently applying what it knows -- technology -- into an area which could always use more innovation -- health.
Google said about one in 19 people globally are diabetic and the procedures to keep tabs on blood sugar levels can be cumbersome and painful. Should the company move forward with the product (no time frame was available), it would help the lives of millions.
And, not to necessarily think in terms of profit so much as improved lifestyle, Google would also be able to start drawing revenue from a whole new and robust segment. In addition, sales of its wearable Google Glass product might ramp should the company be able to offer different, enhanced contact lenses that work with the system.
