Freddie Mac (OTCQB: FMCC) reported that 30-year fixed-rate mortgages averaged 6.15% as of December 31, 2025, marking the lowest level for the year.
The rate decreased from 6.18% the previous week and dropped significantly from 6.91% a year earlier, according to the company's Primary Mortgage Market Survey. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.44%, down from 5.50% the prior week and 6.13% in the same period last year.
"After starting the year close to 7%, the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage moved to its lowest level in 2025 this week, an encouraging sign for potential homebuyers heading into the new year," said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac's Chief Economist.
The survey focuses on conventional, conforming, fully amortizing home purchase loans for borrowers who make a 20% down payment and have excellent credit. The data comes from Freddie Mac's weekly mortgage market survey, which tracks lending rates across the United States.
The mortgage rates represent a notable decline from earlier in 2025, when rates approached 7% at the beginning of the year. The year-over-year comparison shows rates dropped by 0.76 percentage points for 30-year loans and 0.69 percentage points for 15-year mortgages.
