Canadian economy set for strong rebound with 3.4% Q2 expansion
Investing.com -- The Canadian economy is regaining momentum faster than anticipated, driven by persistent strength in resource extraction and broad-based industrial expansion. According to preliminary data released by Statistics Canada, real gross domestic product expanded at an annualized rate of 3.4% in the second quarter, marking a sharp operational turnaround following a minor contraction early in the year.
The robust Q2 trajectory significantly outpaces the Bank of Canada's July projection of 2.5% annualized growth, effectively dispelling near-term recessionary concerns following a period of trade-induced stagnation. Industrial output advanced 0.3% in May for a second consecutive monthly gain, supported by expansions across 13 of 20 primary sectors.
Energy extraction remained the primary catalyst for growth, as the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas sector climbed 1.0% in May behind higher crude bitumen output in Alberta. Unseasonably elevated extraction activity was further bolstered by deferred spring maintenance schedules, alongside a 7.3% surge in support services for the resource industry.
Goods-producing sectors broadly led the monthly advance with a 0.6% increase, complemented by steady 0.2% growth across service-producing industries. Construction activity gained 0.8% behind gains in residential apartment projects, while real estate transaction volume surged 5.1% as resale activity accelerated in key markets across Ontario and British Columbia.
Financial sector performance also provided notable tailwinds, rising 0.3% as heightened equity and bond market activity offset broader global market volatility. Meanwhile, transportation and warehousing lifted 0.3%, propelled by a 2.7% expansion in pipeline throughput following strong natural gas export demand.
An advance estimate points to a continued 0.2% monthly GDP expansion in June, putting total second-quarter industrial output growth on track for 0.8% unadjusted. Statistics Canada is scheduled to publish its official second-quarter GDP figures and finalized June output metrics on August 28.
