The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. (NYSE: MHP) is trading slightly down today before their third quarter earnings release before the market opens on Monday, October 23, 2009. Shares are down less than 0.05% to $15.58.

The consensus on McGraw-Hill is an EPS of $1.05 for Q309 and revenues of $1.94 billion.
PERFORMANCE:
McGraw-Hill has been down about 7.5% through the third quarter, and up about 31% YTD. The Printing and Publishing sector has been up about 8.5% for three months and 4.5% YTD.

Data from Bloomberg shows that 5 analysts have Buy ratings on the company, 4 have a Hold, and 1 has a Sell. The average price among the analysts is $38.00.
ANALYST VIEW:
Benchmark Recently downgraded McGraw-Hill from Buy to Hold, believing that the ratings companies are likely to face increasing regulatory pressure.
Piper Jaffray sees improving fundamentals at McGraw-Hill, states, "The debt capital markets are showing continuing recovery after a near shutdown in 2008, with signs of life beginning to broaden from investment grade to high yield and securitized markets. Total 3Q US new debt volumes grew 20% y/y,
with the total number of deals increasing 15% y/y. The positive momentum in issuance volumes coupled with tight cost controls suggest room for upside to our 3Q estimates."
EARMARKS:
The Obama administration also issued C
redit Agency Reform legislation in July. The legislation called for more transparency, tightened oversight, and reduced reliance for the agencies.
McGraw-Hill announced that it was exploring options for BusinessWeek. Bloomberg expressed interest mid-September.
In August, McGraw-Hill and Amazon.com expanded their strategic alliance to publish higher-education content on Amazon's Kindle, a portable reader.
