"Our performance in the third quarter once again was driven by volume-based sales growth, improving gross margins and tight control of operating expenses, allowing us to deliver very attractive earnings growth," Eli Lilly and Co. CEO John C. Lechleiter stated.

The profit for the Indianapolis-based pharmaceutical giant was $1.31 billion, above the $1.08 billion profit from the year ago quarter. Leading sales for Eli Lilly was the growth of the Zyprexa medication that increased sales by 3 percent in the third quarter. Zyprexa sales totaled $1.2 billion of the third quarter

"These results are evidence of the strength of our current operations as we implement our new operating model, streamline our organization and take measures to accelerate the flow of new medicines through our pipeline," added Lechleiter.
