Utilities sector stocks have outperformed the broader market by 5 percent in the past 30 days. Equities in this sector are consider to be defensive, meaning the performance is relatively unaffected by downturns in the economy.
Utilities Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLU) posted a gain of 1.14 percent since April 20th. SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) has suffered a loss of 5.95 percent in the same period.
The top holding in XLU are Southern Company (NYSE: SO), Exelon Corp (NYSE: EXC), Dominion Resources Inc (NYSE: D).
