U.S. Bond Yields Tick Higher (TLT)
iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treas Bond (NYSE: TLT) traded lower as yield on U.S. treasures moved higher today. The selloff came as rates on 10-year U.S. treasures moved higher to 1.622. Year-to-date, TLT is higher by 5 percent – not bad for a bond investment.
The high relative returns came as a result of increasing interest in U.S. treasures, generally viewed as the least ugly house in an increasingly dilapidated neighborhood. Today's decline in U.S. bond prices represents a small reversal in a clear trend toward lower rates on U.S. treasures.
Whether or not today's move points to higher yields on a longer term basis is unknown, and it will largely depend on developments in peripheral Eurozone countries such as Spain and Italy, two countries that have seen yields on their debt explode. Today yields on 10-year treasures in both countries ticked lower, trending in the opposite direction to yields on U.S. and German bonds.
