German Chancellor Merkel Re-Elected for Third Time
German Chancellor Angela Merkel was re-elected over the weekend in results that bested even her own party's expectations.
According to available data, Merkel's conservative bloc was at 41.5 percent, the strongest result since 1990 and five seats shy of having an absolute majority. It would have been the first absolute majority in over 50 years.
Merkel is also the only major leader elected for the second time since the global fiscal crisis of 2008. This will be the third four-year term for the Christian Democrat leader.
Following results, the German government bond futures and euro ticked higher on anticipation of continuity of current policies.
