VisionWave begins development of space-based counter-drone system

December 2, 2025 8:32 AM EST

VisionWave Technologies Inc., a subsidiary of VisionWave Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: VWAV), announced it has started research and development on Argus, a space-enabled counter-drone system developed in partnership with BladeRanger.

The system is designed to detect, classify, track and neutralize hostile unmanned aircraft across wide operational areas. Argus combines space-based imaging, object-recognition artificial intelligence, high-frequency communications and multiple interceptors and effectors.

The space segment uses satellites equipped with electro-optical, infrared and optional synthetic aperture radar payloads to monitor borders, infrastructure, ports and urban areas. The system applies AI technology to identify structural features of drones and creates virtual 3D models using multi-view imagery.

For connectivity, Argus uses an AI-controlled high-frequency backbone to maintain communications between satellites, ground stations and interceptor sites when other communication links are jammed or disabled. The system includes asynchronous encryption to protect GPS and command-and-control links.

At the engagement layer, the system coordinates interceptor drones, ground-based rapid-fire systems, radio frequency jammers, navigation injectors and optional lasers or high-power microwave assets for both soft-kill and hard-kill responses.

"Modern conflicts have shown that small drones and loitering munitions can redefine the battlefield with little warning," said Doug Davis, VisionWave Chairman. "Argus is intended to be designed to provide nations with a theater-scale shield that can detect hostile drones from space, classify them instantly, and coordinate a precise response in real time."

VisionWave has completed the system architecture and plans to file a patent application covering its core technical innovations. The company states Argus will build on existing VisionWave technologies including encryption for high-frequency communications, pattern-recognition technology and AI-driven networks.

The press release notes that VisionWave has entered into a binding letter of intent to acquire a BladeRanger subsidiary, though the transaction has not closed and remains subject to conditions.
