UnitedHealth Group cooperates with Justice Department investigation

UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) said it has begun complying with formal criminal and civil requests from the Department of Justice regarding certain aspects of its Medicare program participation.

The company stated it proactively contacted the Justice Department after reviewing media reports about investigations into its Medicare operations. UnitedHealth expressed confidence in its practices and commitment to cooperating with the Department throughout the process.

The healthcare company referenced its compliance history, noting that independent Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services audits indicate its practices rank among the most accurate in the industry. UnitedHealth also cited a court-appointed Special Master's conclusion following a decade-long civil challenge that found no evidence supporting claims of wrongdoing in its Medicare Advantage business.

UnitedHealth announced it has launched a third-party review initiative to examine policies, practices, and processes related to risk assessment coding, managed care practices, and pharmacy services. The company described this as a proactive measure to provide stakeholders with transparency regarding its operations.

The company stated its commitment to maintaining business practice integrity and serving as stewards of tax dollars. UnitedHealth did not specify the timeline for the Justice Department investigation or provide details about the specific aspects of its Medicare participation under review.
