Tesla (TSLA) Delays Cybertruck to Late 2022

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) CEO, Elon Musk confirmed yesterday that the Cybertruck has been delayed until late 2022. On a company-wide call with employees, reportedly held yesterday, Musk gave an update on Tesla’s production plans for the Cybertruck, confirming the delay. When Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck back in 2019, they said that the electric pickup truck would make it to market by the end of 2021.

During the release of its 2Q financial results last month, Tesla kept the same 2021 timeline and only specified that Cybertruck production would start at Gigafactory Texas after Model Y:

“We are also making progress on the industrialization of Cybertruck, which is currently planned for Austin production subsequent to Model Y.“

Furthermore, the CEO noted that there’s so much new technology in the electric pickup truck that the production ramp-up is going to be very difficult. He doesn’t expect volume production to be achieved until late 2023.

Despite the news, Musk still took the opportunity to hype up the upcoming Cybertruck:

“It will be a special project. Like a glitch in the Matrix. Like if Neo had a car.”

On the order page, Tesla updated the footnotes to confirm that the configurator will be available when “production nears in 2022.”
